IMMIGRATION LAW IN ARMENIA

VISA REQUIREMENTS

Countries Requiring Visas:

All persons entering Armenia, except the following require visas:

  • Passport holders of Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Korea, Kyrgyz, Moldova, Montenegro, Russian Federation, Serbia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan;
  • Diplomatic and Official passport holders of the Argentine Republic and Uruguay;
  • Diplomatic passport holders of India;
  • Diplomatic and Service passport holders of Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Croatia, Cyprus, Hungary, Iran, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Mexico, Poland, Romania, Singapore, Slovak Republic, and Turkmenistan.

Types of Visa, Validity and Cost:

Ordinary / Tourist Visa: (21 days) $60

Transit Visa:

·        Single Entry: (3 days) $18

·        Double Entry: (3 days) $36

Long Term Visa:

·        Single Entry: (90 days): $35

·        Multiple Entry: (90 days): $65

Diplomatic and Official Visa: This visa is free of charge.

The visas issued to persons under 18 years of age are also free of charge.

Documents Required for Visa Application:

The following documents are required while applying for a Visa:

·        Completed Application Form;

·        One Recent passport-sized photograph;

·        Passport valid for at least 6 months;

·        Copy of travel ticket or itinerary;

·        Visa Fees payable by money order or certified cheque. 

Along with the above documents the following documents are also required as per the visa type:

For Transit Visa: 

·        Photocopy of a valid visa for the country of main destination;

·        Airline tickets.

For Single and Multiple Entry Visa for stays over 21 days:

·        Official invitation letter from a duly authorized entity in Armenia.

ARMENIAN CITIZENSHIP

A person may acquire Armenian citizenship through one of the following methods:

1.      By Recognition: The following persons are recognized as Armenian citizens: 

·        Citizens of the former Socialist Soviet Republic of Armenia who are living permanently in the Republic of Armenia and have not acquired any other country’s citizenship;

·        Persons having no citizenship and residing permanently in the Republic of Armenia during the 3 years before the Citizenship law came into effect or, former USSR citizens making an application for acquiring Armenian citizenship;

·        Citizens of the former Socialist Soviet Republic of Armenia who are living abroad since September 21, 1991 having no citizenship of another country and, citizens of the former Socialist Soviet Republic of Armenia, of Armenian nationality, having lived abroad till September 21, 1991, having no citizenship of another country and registered with the Consulate before the Citizenship law came into effect.

2.      By Birth: The following persons acquire Armenian citizenship by birth:

  • A person one of whose parents is an Armenian citizen and the other is unknown or a person with no citizenship;
  • A person whose one parent is an Armenian citizen and the other a foreign citizen can acquire Armenian citizenship by the written agreement of both parents, or, in the absence of an agreement he / she can acquire Armenian citizenship if he / she is born in the Republic of Armenia;
  • A person born within the territory of the Republic of Armenia whose parents have no citizenship of any country.

3.      By Descent: The following persons can acquire Armenian citizenship by descent:

  • A person whose both parents are Armenian citizens irrespective of the person’s place of birth;
  • A child under 14 years of age whose parents acquire Armenian citizenship.

4.      By Adoption: A child acquires Armenian citizenship by adoption if:

both the adoptive parents are Armenian citizens;

  • one of the adoptive parents has no citizenship and the other is an Armenian citizen; 
  • one of the adoptive parents is a foreign citizen and the other is an Armenian citizen, provided, both parents consent to acquisition of Armenian citizenship by the child / the child lives in the Republic of Armenia and consent of the Armenian adoptive parent is present / the child has no citizenship or in case of not acquiring Armenian citizenship it becomes a person with no citizenship.  

5.      By Naturalization: A person can acquire Armenian citizenship by naturalization upon fulfillment of the following conditions:

  • has attained 18 years of age;
  • has resided in Armenia for the last 3 years;
  • is able to communicate in Armenian language;
  • is familiar with the Armenian Constitution.

The following persons are exempted from the 3 years residence requirement:

·        A person whose spouse, child, father or mother is an Armenian citizen;

·        A person whose either or both parents were Armenian citizens in the past or he / she was born in the Republic of Armenia and applies for Armenian citizenship within 3 years of his / her attaining 18 years of age;

·        A person who is Armenian by birth and has taken residence in the Republic of Armenia.
