The Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996 came
into force with effect from 22.8.1996. It consolidates and amends
the law relating to domestic arbitration, international commercial
arbitration and enforcement of foreign arbitral awards.
It applies to the whole of India. It applies to
the State of Jammu and Kashmir to the extent of the provisions relating
to enforcement of foreign awards, which apply in full, other provisions
apply insofar as they relate to international commercial arbitration
or conciliation.
The Act is based on the conciliation rules adopted
by the United Nations Commission on International Trade (UNCITRAL)
