images.jpg In the wake of the latest IPL 6 spot fixing and match fixing controversy, that has left the Cricket loving nation like ours in a state of utter shock and despair, the question whether betting in sports be legalized has assumed a renewed importance. Regulating and legalizing betting in sports has its own merits. It is easy to see the kind of harm betting has caused to many a sport, not just in India but across the world. Though betting and corruption is rampant in Cricket, it has raised its ugly head in other sports too. Cricket in particularly has been badly impacted and marred by the controversies which find their roots in betting. Earlier Ajay Jadeja and Mohammad Azharuddin were banned from cricket owing to Match fixing charges and there was much hue and cry over revelations by the then caption of South African team – Hansie Cronje. Betting in the recent IPL 6 has put a question mark to the credibility of the game itself. So much so that there are talks of banning IPL as a tournament.

Let us consider the merits of legalizing betting in sports. If betting is legalized, this open market betting environment will allow the bettor to be protected against fraud, where the law can take its course if he is defrauded or cheated by bookies. Whereas in the current scenario, the bettor is at the mercy of the bookies, as he has no legal right to have their bets realized. The illegal betting itself has caused immense harm to society making it vulnerable to the crimes conducted by the black money in circulation owing to illegal betting. Also, the sport federations and the government lose an effective tool to detect and curb match fixing in sports.

Other than checking corrupt practices in sports, legalizing betting may help government to regulate a business worth rupees three thousand crore annually, as per a report by KPMG. FICCI puts up revenue figure of twenty thousand crore annually for Government if betting is given the legal status in India.

Worldwide betting is allowed in sports which are skill based like Horse racing. Sport is a game of skill and luck or chance play a very little role in sport. Hence betting in sports like Cricket, which is skill based, is different from gambling and lottery.

Regulating & legalizing betting in sports will have more than one benefit. This will include reducing match fixing and other such dishonest practices in sports. Since any surprise betting settlements could be reported to authorities and can check their occurrences. It will also help create additional tax revenues for the government. But there are challenges related to legalizing betting too. Any form of gambling which includes betting has a sense of social disapproval attached to it. This could also cause a large section of society which are an ardent sports lovers right from their early years in youth take to betting as a way of making easy money. This could also lead to flourishing of much collusion and sharing of confidential information and other such unhealthy practices in sports if betting be legalized.

It may still not be very prudent to let illegal betting take its enormous blow on sports credibility and public interest in the game. Instead the answer lies in legalizing betting in sporting events and then actively regulating by establishing bodies to oversee the regulatory process.

Please sign, share, comment in support of legalization and regulation of Betting in Indian Sports!

To,

Mr. Kapil Sibal
The Law Minister
Government of India

Dear Mr. Sibal,

Today, there’s is a strong need to stand & deliver against all dishonest practices in the Indian sports. Sport, which is a show of skill and years of professional training the players undergo shouldn’t be tagged by the reckless practices of spot - fixing & match fixing.

The latest IPL 6 controversy has badly hurt the sentiments of this Cricket loving nation. It’s the need of the hour to come out of this menace by take steps towards amendments to improve our Gambling act. Punishing the ones who are caught in this dirty practice may prove to be a deterrent to others, but may not address the problem of betting to its core. As there would be many others who will still go uncaught.

The only potent solution of this chronic problem plaguing Indian Sports is to legalize and regulate betting in Indian sports. It will would not only enable a better monitoring of match-fixing and spot-fixing events thus reducing their occurrence, but will also provide the country with a new revenue stream and help create additional tax revenues for the government. Besides it generating employment opportunities for our fellow countrymen.

In International arena too, the International Olympic Committee has urged governments around the world ‘to create a legal framework in which legal betting can take place. Also, in a survey conducted by FICCI 74% people believe legalizing betting in sports would help curb match fixing and 83% said regulating betting was better than banning it.

We, the citizens of this sports-obsessed country want this issue of legalizing the betting in sports, which is at a preliminary stage of discussion, to get faster approval in order to stop corruption in sports. It’s time now to put a stop to such dishonest practices not by banning but by regulating them!

Thanks!
